This historic exhibit tells the stories of the courageous lawyers, judges, and citizens, including many New Yorkers of color, who helped rescue and represent eight enslaved people.

Featuring a short documentary narrated by James Earl Jones, the Exhibit brings to life the Lemmon Slave Case, a series of decisions by New York State courts holding slaves brought into the state were not property, disagreeing with U.S. Supreme Court’s 1857 decision in the Dred Scott case.
